The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) suffered a major blow on Tuesday as four of its senators from Akwa Ibom and Osun States officially defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), citing internal crises and irreconcilable differences within the opposition party.
Their defection was formally announced on the floor of the Senate by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who read their separate letters during plenary. The senators who left the PDP are Senator Akon Eyakenyi representing Akwa Ibom South, Senator Nicholas Tofowomo representing Ondo South, Senator Olalere Oyewumi representing Osun West, and Senator Francis Fadahunsi representing Osun East.
In their letters, the lawmakers attributed their decision to the lingering leadership issues in the PDP, ongoing litigations, and lack of internal democracy which they claimed had rendered the party ineffective and unstable.
