LagosExplorer reports: The city of Lagos is once again in the global sporting spotlight as it prepares to host the 2025 Lagos International Badminton Classic. The championship, scheduled to run from August 27 to 30 at the Teslim Balogun Indoor Sports Hall, Surulere, will attract top athletes from more than 30 countries.

Organised by the Badminton Federation of Nigeria in partnership with the Badminton World Federation and supported by the Lagos State Sports Commission, the tournament has become one of Africa’s most prestigious badminton events. This year, over 200 elite players from across Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas are expected to compete, with powerhouses such as India, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, and Indonesia already confirmed. Teams from the United States, Canada, France, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates will also be represented, alongside Nigeria’s homegrown talents.

The competition is officially sanctioned by the world governing body of badminton and offers valuable ranking points that count towards Olympic Games and World Championship qualifications. This has heightened interest, making Lagos a key destination on the global badminton calendar.

Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, assured fans and stakeholders of the state’s readiness, citing improved sporting facilities, robust security, and Lagos’s commitment to hosting international-standard competitions. He emphasised that Lagos is determined to consolidate its reputation as Africa’s leading sports hub, while using events like this to drive youth development, inspire local athletes, and boost economic opportunities.

In recent months, Lagos has successfully hosted several international tournaments across table tennis, fencing, and archery. The upcoming badminton classic is set to reinforce the state’s growing reputation as a hub for world-class sporting excellence.

Matches will be open to fans free of charge, while games will also be streamed live across official digital platforms to ensure global audiences do not miss the action.

The Lagos International Badminton Classic is expected to deliver not just high-level competition, but also a vibrant atmosphere that showcases Nigeria’s organisational capacity and passion for sports on the global stage.
