Governor Peter Mbah Joins APC, Declared Party Leader in Enugu as Shettima Hails Defection
LagosExplorer reports:
Enugu witnessed a historic political moment on Wednesday as Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), signaling a new wave of realignment in South-East politics.
The grand reception, held at the iconic Okpara Square, Enugu, drew thousands of party supporters, top APC leaders, and government officials. The Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, GCON, represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, at the event and formally welcomed Governor Mbah into the APC fold.
In his address, Vice President Shettima described Mbah’s defection as a defining moment that underscores the growing strength of the APC in the South-East. He officially announced the Enugu governor as the leader of the APC in the state, noting that the party recognizes the sitting governor as the leader in every state under its control.
“This is a day of unity and renewed confidence in Nigeria’s democracy,” Shettima said on behalf of President Tinubu. “Governor Peter Mbah embodies the vision of progress and inclusion that the Renewed Hope Agenda represents. His decision to join the APC further strengthens our collective resolve to build a prosperous and united nation.”
Governor Mbah, in his remarks, said his decision to join the APC was driven by a commitment to align Enugu with the federal government’s developmental agenda and attract greater opportunities for his people. He emphasized that the move was not based on political rivalry but on a desire to foster prosperity and collaboration.
“We are moving forward with purpose and vision,” Mbah said. “This decision reflects our commitment to peace, growth, and the progress of Enugu State within a united Nigeria.”
The event also saw several commissioners, local government chairpersons, and members of the Enugu State House of Assembly joining the governor in his defection.
Governor Mbah, a lawyer, entrepreneur, and former Commissioner for Finance in Enugu State, came into office in 2023 with a vision focused on transforming Enugu into a hub of digital governance, infrastructure renewal, and private-sector investment.
