LagosExplorer reports: The global film industry is in mourning following the death of Canadian actor Graham Greene, the Oscar-nominated star of Dances With Wolves, who passed away peacefully at the age of 73 in Stratford, Ontario.
Greene, born in 1952 in the Six Nations Reserve of Ontario, became a groundbreaking figure in Hollywood, celebrated for giving powerful voice and dignity to Indigenous representation on screen. His defining role as “Kicking Bird” in Kevin Costner’s 1990 epic Dances With Wolves earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, cementing his place in cinema history.
His manager, Gerry Jordan, confirmed the sad news, describing Greene’s passing on September 1 as “peaceful.” U.S. agent Michael Greene also paid tribute, calling him “a great man of morals, ethics and character,” sentiments echoed by fans and colleagues across the world.
Beyond Dances With Wolves, Greene’s career spanned decades with memorable roles in Thunderheart, The Green Mile, Maverick, The Twilight Saga, and television hits like Reservation Dogs, Tulsa King, The Last of Us, and Marvel’s Echo. His work extended to voice acting and narration, earning him a Grammy Award for spoken word performance and even a role in the popular video game Red Dead Redemption 2.
Recognised at home as much as abroad, Greene was honoured with the prestigious Order of Canada and received the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award in June 2025. These accolades reflected not just his artistry, but his role as a cultural trailblazer who opened doors for future generations of Indigenous actors.
