Former First Lady, Aisha Buhari, has finally responded to the viral reports alleging she divorced her late husband, ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, before his passing. The clarification came after public outrage over a controversial article by US-based Nigerian academic, Professor Farooq Kperogi, who alleged that the couple had parted ways.
In a statement conveyed through her former Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs, Alhaji Sani Zorro, Mrs Buhari debunked the report, stressing that no such divorce ever occurred.
Reacting to the backlash, Kperogi admitted his error and expressed regret over the publication, saying: “It’s become clear that I relied on a grievously and maliciously inaccurate source for my story. I’ve never been more scandalously betrayed by a source in my entire journalistic career.” He described the article as “one of the worst and cruelest lapses of judgment I’ve ever committed.”
Kperogi, who had claimed in his widely circulated July 16 piece that Aisha and Buhari had separated, later revealed it was Zorro who reached out to him and conveyed the former First Lady’s firm denial.
The presidency and close family sources have remained silent, but Aisha Buhari’s direct rebuttal appears to have quelled the rumours that dominated social media conversations in recent days.
