Mohbad: Nurse to Face Trial as Coroner Blames Medical Negligence, Family Failures
The Lagos Coroner Inquest probing the tragic death of 26-year-old Afrobeats sensation, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has concluded with a damning verdict that points to gross medical negligence, systemic lapses, and disturbing family decisions.
After months of testimonies and forensic reviews, the court on Friday confirmed that Mohbad died from a severe reaction to injections administered by an unlicensed auxiliary nurse, Feyisayo Ogedengbe, who treated him at home during his final hours. The pathologists revealed that the body's advanced state of decomposition hampered a definitive cause of death, but all indicators pointed to a fatal medical error.
The coroner condemned the nurse’s actions as reckless and dangerous, describing it as a case of medical misadventure. It called for her immediate prosecution over her role in the young artiste’s demise.
Equally criticized was Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba, for orchestrating a rushed and undignified burial under the cover of darkness, without securing a death certificate or authorizing an autopsy. While acknowledging cultural pressures, the court maintained that due legal and medical steps were ignored.
The musician’s wife also came under scrutiny for allegedly failing to ensure he received proper treatment after sustaining an injury in the days before his death, and for not raising alarm over the questionable handling of his remains.
The inquest painted a grim picture of Mohbad’s final days—marked by fear, neglect, and abandonment by family, institutions, and the very industry he helped enrich. The coroner further urged the Nigerian Police to explain their inaction regarding Mohbad’s earlier petitions against threats to his life, especially those involving Marlian Music boss, Naira Marley.
In its final recommendation, the court demanded a proper and dignified reburial for the late singer, and called for accountability across all fronts that contributed to the loss of a rising star silenced far too soon.
