Gbajabiamila Dismisses ADC Alliance as Dead on Arrival

Gbajabiamila Mocks ADC Bloc, Says It Won’t Survive Till 2027

Chief of Staff to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has downplayed the potential of the newly formed opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), saying it poses no real threat to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking to journalists shortly after casting his vote during the local government elections in Surulere, Lagos, Gbajabiamila acknowledged that while the emergence of opposition coalitions is a natural and healthy feature of any democracy, the ADC-led alliance is unlikely to go far.

He described the coalition—made up of heavyweights like Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rauf Aregbesola, David Mark, and others—as politically exciting but lacking long-term cohesion. According to him, alliances formed purely to grab power without strong ideological grounding often collapse under the weight of their contradictions.

He maintained that the APC remains the party to beat, noting that Nigerians are wise enough to differentiate between genuine reformers and opportunistic political arrangements. Gbajabiamila further stated that the current administration is focused on deepening reforms, rebuilding the economy, and strengthening institutions to deliver better governance.

On the local government elections, he hailed the peaceful conduct of the process but expressed concern over low voter turnout, stressing the need for more civic engagement and trust in electoral systems. He also applauded the Supreme Court’s recent ruling affirming the financial autonomy of local governments, describing it as a victory for grassroots governance.

Gbajabiamila insisted that opposition parties must do more than stage grand alliances—they must present coherent plans and show capacity if they are to be taken seriously by the electorate.
