Panic spread across the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and beyond on Friday after unknown gunmen reportedly opened fire on the party’s Anambra governorship candidate, Chief Jude Ezenwafor, in Abuja. The chilling attack occurred while the candidate was returning from a scheduled appointment, sparking fears of a targeted political assassination.
In a swift reaction, the PDP, through its National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, condemned the assault, calling it a desperate attempt by anti-democratic forces to silence a candidate whose popularity has been steadily rising ahead of the November 8, 2025 election.
“This cowardly attack, upon analysis, points to certain vested interests who feel threatened by the overwhelming support our candidate enjoys,” Ologunagba stated. The party further accused these unnamed forces of plotting a smear campaign against Ezenwafor after the failed assassination attempt.
The party declared that no act of violence or blackmail would stop the people of Anambra from choosing a leader committed to transparency and progress. It reiterated its confidence in Ezenwafor’s candidacy, assuring that the will of the people will prevail at the ballot.
While urging the Inspector General of Police to launch a comprehensive investigation and bring the attackers to justice, the PDP demanded immediate reinforcement of security around its candidate.
“Our candidate is divinely destined and enjoys the overwhelming support of the people. He will emerge victorious,” the party insisted, encouraging Ezenwafor to remain focused and undaunted by the threats.
