Governor emphasizes fairness and unity in selection of Ijebuland’s next monarch
LagosExplorer reports that Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has charged the Awujale Chiefs-in-Council to conduct a transparent and fair process in the appointment of a new Awujale of Ijebuland.
The revered stool became vacant following the death of Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who passed away on July 13, 2025, at the age of 91 after an illustrious reign of over 65 years.
Speaking in Iperu after a closed-door meeting with the kingmakers, Abiodun emphasized that Ijebuland cannot afford a prolonged vacuum on the throne. He assured that the government would support whoever emerges from the nomination process, provided due tradition and laws are followed.
“Nature abhors a vacuum, and the process of installing another Awujale has commenced. Our discussion centered on ensuring that all procedures are strictly followed in line with Ijebu tradition. I am pleased that we are united in this approach, which should put an end to the rumors flying around,” the governor stated.
The governor expressed confidence in the council members, describing them as respected custodians who had stood firmly by the late monarch throughout his reign. He stressed that all contestants for the exalted seat must be given equal opportunity to avoid rancor and ensure peace in Ijebuland.
Abiodun also revealed that he delayed meeting the council until after the 40-day mourning period to formally commiserate with the chiefs and reaffirm his trust in their ability to steer the process without bias.
“The Council is intact, united, and working harmoniously. I am satisfied with their commitment and dedication to safeguarding the interest of Ijebuland,” he said.
On his part, the Olootu Olowa and Deputy Chairman of the Council, Chief Oluwaranti Lekan Osifeso, reassured that the chiefs remain resolute in their peace-building mission, pledging continued unity and collective service for the progress of the land.
