Tiwa Savage: Dating Poorer Men Was a Mistake — I Now Want a Wealthy Partner

LagosExplorer reports: Nigerian music superstar Tiwa Savage has opened up about her past relationship choices, admitting she regrets dating men who were financially less successful than she is. Speaking in an interview with British media personality Zeze Mills, the award-winning singer said she now prioritises financial stability in a partner.

“I used to make the mistake of dating down, saying I don’t care if you’re not making money, it’s just love,” Savage said. “Now, I think I need someone that just has money. I think I’m at that point now. Love is really nice but you can judge me for wanting a wealthier person if you want.”

The “Koroba” crooner, who rose to fame in Nigeria after years of honing her craft in the UK and US, has long been one of Africa’s most successful female artists, with multiple awards and endorsements to her name. Her personal life has often been in the spotlight, especially following her highly publicised marriage and divorce from former manager Tunji “Teebillz” Balogun, with whom she shares a son.

Savage’s comments have sparked conversations on social media, with many fans debating whether financial compatibility should be a key factor in modern relationships. While some users defended her right to set higher standards given her success, others argued that love should remain the primary consideration in choosing a partner.

Over the years, Tiwa Savage has built a global career performing on some of the world’s biggest stages, collaborating with international stars, and influencing the Afrobeats movement. Her latest remarks underscore how her personal experiences have shaped her perspective on love, success, and partnership.
