LagosExplorer reports: Nigerian Fuji music icon Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as K1 De Ultimate or Kwam 1, has publicly apologised to the Presidency, aviation authorities, ValueJet airline, and Nigerians after a dramatic incident at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on Tuesday, August 5, 2025. The episode, which has dominated headlines, revolved around his insistence on boarding with a personal flask — a move that triggered security concerns and temporarily halted flight operations.
Born in 1957, K1 is widely credited with revolutionising Fuji music and expanding its reach globally. His cultural status as the Mayegun of Yorubaland means that any controversy linked to him resonates deeply with fans and critics alike.
How the Airport Drama Unfolded
According to aviation sources, the incident began during a routine security check when officials noticed the artiste carrying a metallic flask. Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) staff reportedly suspected it might contain alcohol — a violation of on-board safety protocols. While the contents were being debated, witnesses alleged K1 blocked the ValueJet aircraft’s movement on the tarmac, an action aviation regulators later described as dangerous and unacceptable.
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) swiftly responded by placing K1 on a temporary no-fly list and suspending the ValueJet pilot and co-pilot for six months.
K1’s Explanation and Health Disclosure
In his official statement, K1 clarified that the flask was empty during security checks and only filled with water at the airport lounge, citing chronic dehydration, a condition he says requires him to have water on hand at all times.
> “It was never my intention to disrupt airport operations or disrespect our aviation rules. CCTV footage will confirm that the flask only contained water, as prescribed by my doctor,” K1 stated, stressing his “unwavering patriotism and respect for Nigerian laws.”
