LagosExplorer reports: Former American baseball star David Justice has ignited fresh controversy after publicly revealing why his marriage to Hollywood superstar Halle Berry ended, citing her lack of interest in cooking, cleaning, or embracing traditional domestic roles.
Speaking on the widely followed All the Smoke podcast, Justice — who married Berry in 1993 before their highly publicised 1997 divorce — claimed his youthful expectations of marriage were deeply rooted in the Midwest upbringing that shaped his values.
“She don’t cook, don’t clean, don’t really seem like motherly,” the former Major League Baseball (MLB) outfielder said, explaining that Berry’s independent lifestyle clashed with the “traditional wife” image he had in mind. Justice added that, at the time, he questioned whether the actress could be the mother of his children.
The 58-year-old sports veteran acknowledged that immaturity and lack of relationship guidance contributed to the breakdown. “I didn’t know anything about therapy or how to fix issues. Had I known, maybe it could have been saved,” he admitted.
Berry, now 59, is one of the most celebrated actresses in the world. She made history in 2002 when she became the first Black woman to win the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in Monster’s Ball. Over her decades-long career, she has starred in blockbuster hits including X-Men, Die Another Day, Gothika, and John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. Beyond acting, Berry is known for her philanthropic work, activism for domestic violence awareness, and advocacy for diversity in Hollywood.
Justice, for his part, was a standout MLB player throughout the 1990s, making his mark with the Atlanta Braves, Cleveland Indians, and New York Yankees. He won two World Series championships (1995 and 2000), was named Rookie of the Year in 1990, and became a three-time MLB All-Star. His athletic achievements cemented his reputation as one of baseball’s most talented and charismatic players of his era.
Since Justice’s remarks surfaced, social media has been ablaze with debate. Critics blasted his comments as outdated and sexist, arguing that a woman’s value in marriage should not be defined by her domestic contributions. Supporters of Berry pointed out that her independence, career accomplishments, and global influence outweigh the narrow traditional roles Justice described.
Berry has yet to respond to the interview, but this is not the first time her personal life has come under public scrutiny. Despite multiple high-profile relationships and marriages, she remains a respected and influential figure in the entertainment industry.
