Ebenezer Obey Breaks Silence on Death and Stroke Rumours, Declares “I Am Alive and Well”

LagosExplorer reports: Legendary juju music icon, Chief Ebenezer Obey-Fabiyi, has dismissed circulating rumours claiming that he suffered a stroke or passed away. The 82-year-old maestro, widely celebrated as one of Nigeria’s most influential musicians, took to Instagram to assure fans of his good health, describing the reports as “lies from the kingdom of darkness.”

In a video that quickly went viral, Obey—flanked by his two sons—sang praises to God while addressing concerned fans. With firmness in his voice, he declared: “Enemies have come again. I am alive. I do not have a stroke, and I am well.” The reassurance ended days of speculation after unverified claims about his health trended online.

Obey, fondly known as the “Chief Commander,” explained that his recent trip to London was strictly personal and not for any medical emergency, as was being rumoured. “Stop the rumours. Ebenezer Obey is alive and well,” he stressed. His statement sparked relief and joy among fans across social media, with many offering prayers of gratitude and words of encouragement.

This is not the first time the music legend has had to dispel reports about his health. Similar false claims surfaced earlier in 2025, echoing previous years when he was wrongly reported dead. Each time, the juju star has stepped forward to reaffirm his resilience and faith, reminding his audience that he remains strong despite his age.

Born Ebenezer Remilekun Aremu Olasupo Obey-Fabiyi on 3 April 1942 in Idogo, Ogun State, Obey is one of the pioneers of juju music, a genre that shaped Nigeria’s cultural identity from the 1960s. He started his career in Lagos, forming the International Brothers Band, which later became the Inter-Reformers Band. Through timeless hits like Board Members and Palongo, he introduced a distinct sound that fused Yoruba rhythms, highlife, and gospel-inspired themes.

Beyond music, Obey has lived as a Christian minister, mentor, and philanthropist, using his art to spread moral and spiritual messages. Over six decades, his impact has placed him side by side with other greats such as King Sunny Ade, making him one of Nigeria’s most enduring cultural icons.

With his latest response, Obey not only reassures fans of his wellbeing but also calls attention to the dangers of misinformation in the digital age—an issue that continues to affect public figures worldwide.
