LagosExplorer reports that a bizarre legal battle has erupted in the United States as Mark S. Zuckerberg, an Indiana-based bankruptcy lawyer, has dragged Meta Platforms Inc., owners of Facebook, to court after his accounts were repeatedly shut down over mistaken identity.
The attorney, who shares the same name as Meta’s billionaire CEO, Mark E. Zuckerberg, said his personal and professional Facebook accounts have been suspended multiple times in the past eight years on suspicion of impersonation. Despite spending over $11,000 (₦18 million) on advertising to promote his law firm, the lawyer claims his business page was abruptly pulled down in May, causing severe financial setbacks.
Zuckerberg likened the ordeal to “buying a billboard on the side of the highway” only to have it “covered up,” stressing that Meta’s repeated suspensions crippled his business visibility. Each time his account was blocked, he was forced to submit sensitive documents—driver’s licence, credit card details, and personal photos—to prove his identity, only for the ban to reoccur.
The confusion has spilled beyond social media. The lawyer revealed he once faced mistaken litigation by the State of Washington, prank calls, death threats, and countless misdirected messages intended for the tech mogul, all because of their identical names.
Meta has since admitted error, reinstated his account, and assured him of steps to prevent a recurrence. However, the lawyer is demanding compensation for lost revenue, repayment of legal fees, and a permanent injunction to stop future wrongful bans.
