Obi Breaks Silence, Declares Loyalty to Labour Party
Amid swirling speculations over his political allegiance, former presidential candidate Peter Obi has reaffirmed his commitment to the Labour Party, declaring that he remains a dedicated member of the party on which platform he contested the 2023 election.
Speaking during the official campaign flag-off for the Anambra Labour Party governorship candidate, Dr George Moghalu, in Onitsha, Obi addressed the rumours linking him to a defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), stating that while he supports broader political coalitions to rescue Nigeria, he has not dumped the Labour Party.
Obi clarified that the recent formation of a coalition with other opposition figures under the umbrella of the “coalition for a new Nigeria” was purely strategic and not a move to abandon his party. According to him, the initiative is aimed at uniting like-minded political actors for the 2027 elections and beyond.
He reiterated that his collaboration with other political groups was not an indication of defection but a deliberate effort to build a formidable force against bad governance. The former Anambra State governor assured his supporters that the Labour Party remains his political home and base for future engagements.
Obi, who also used the platform to endorse the party’s candidate for the 2025 Anambra gubernatorial election, called on citizens to rally around credible and competent leaders that will restore hope and integrity in governance.
With rising tensions and speculation over potential political realignments ahead of 2027, Obi’s emphatic declaration puts to rest doubts about his loyalty and signals his continued relevance in the nation's evolving political landscape.
