Sanwo-Olu: LASTMA Attackers Will Face Justice

Speaking at the 2nd Lagos Traffic Conference held in Ikeja to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, delivered a strong warning against the rising attacks on traffic officers across the state.

He condemned the growing trend of assaults—some fatal—on LASTMA personnel, stating that anyone who attacks the agency’s officers will face swift and uncompromising prosecution. He described such acts as both criminal and disgraceful, stressing that the state will no longer tolerate violence against public servants.

Sanwo-Olu paid tribute to fallen LASTMA officials, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to protecting those who dedicate themselves to maintaining order on Lagos roads, often under dangerous conditions.

In a bid to strengthen traffic management, the governor announced plans to incorporate Artificial Intelligence, drone surveillance, and automatic number plate recognition into LASTMA’s operations. These technologies, he said, will improve efficiency, enhance safety, and ensure quicker response to incidents.

The conference attracted top Lagos officials, security agencies, and international partners. A U.S. delegation, led by Infotran President Sridhar Uttara, proposed establishing a Unified Mobility Control Centre and expanding smart traffic training for LASTMA officers.

The event also featured the launch of a 20-year policy roadmap developed in collaboration with global and local experts to reform and modernize traffic operations across the state.

Sanwo-Olu’s message was unambiguous—those who assault LASTMA officers are attacking law and order itself, and the state is prepared to ensure justice is served without delay.
