UNIZIK Student Dies After Denied Access to Medication

UNIZIK Student Dies After Alleged Negligence by Hostel Mistress — Students Demand Justice

A final-year law student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has died under controversial circumstances, sparking outrage and calls for accountability from her fellow students.

The deceased, identified as Ajana Isabella, reportedly died after she was denied urgent access to her room where she kept life-saving insulin medication. Isabella, who lived at Elmada Hostel within the university environment, was said to be diabetic and had suffered a medical emergency after she and her roommates lost their room key.

According to multiple student accounts, the trio approached the hostel mistress, one Madam Bright, to request a spare key. However, they claim the hostel manager refused to provide one unless they paid a sum of N120,000 — N40,000 each — in line with what she allegedly described as the hostel’s policy.

The students reportedly pleaded, explaining their financial constraints and stressing the urgency of Isabella’s condition, but their requests were ignored. Isabella’s health deteriorated rapidly as she was unable to access her medication.

She eventually collapsed and was rushed to the hospital on Sunday, July 6. Despite efforts to save her, she died three days later, on Wednesday, July 9.

The incident has since ignited anger across the campus and social media, with students demanding justice under the trending hashtag #Justice4Ajana. Many have accused the hostel authorities of negligence and called on university management and relevant authorities to investigate the matter thoroughly.

As of the time of this report, neither the university administration nor the management of Elmada Hostel had issued an official statement regarding the allegations.
