LagosExplorer reports: Popular Nollywood actor and filmmaker, Afeez Owo Abiodun, has finally opened up about the marital storm that once threatened to end his union with actress Mide Martins, revealing that social media played a major role in escalating the crisis.
In a candid conversation on the Behind the Fame podcast, the Yoruba movie star recalled how a minor disagreement between him and his wife spiraled into a public separation saga nearly a decade ago. According to him, what should have been a short cooling-off period turned into months of painful rumors, fueled by viral posts and online speculation.
The actor, widely respected in the Yoruba film industry, explained that the incident began when he had a disagreement with Mide and, in anger, left their matrimonial home intending to spend just two nights in a hotel. However, matters took a dramatic turn when Mide posted online that her husband had abandoned her, triggering a wave of gossip across Nigerian blogs and social media platforms.
“Social media made it worse,” Afeez admitted. “It was just a quarrel between husband and wife, but when it went online, everybody had an opinion. It became a scandal that almost destroyed us.”
The separation, which occurred in 2016, shocked many fans at the time, as the couple had been seen as one of Nollywood’s strongest celebrity unions. Mide Martins, daughter of the late veteran actress Funmi Martins, had already built her name as a respected actress and brand influencer, while Afeez Owo had earned recognition as both an actor and director. Their marriage had long been seen as a partnership of love and professional collaboration in the Yoruba film industry.
Afeez further disclosed that he regretted his own reaction, admitting that leaving home was not the best decision. He noted that it was only after Mide reached out to him with an apology that they were able to reconcile, proving that their bond was stronger than online noise.
Today, Afeez and Mide Martins remain happily married and continue to work together on Nollywood productions, proving that their love was able to withstand the storms of social media.
