EFCC ‘Gestapo-Style’ Raid on Obasanjo Library Sparks Outrage, Legal Threats

LagosExplorer reports: The Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta, Ogun State, has accused operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of violating its corporate rights and trampling on human dignity during a late-night raid that left guests injured and the public outraged.

According to OOPL’s Managing Director, Vitalis Ortese, more than fifty heavily armed EFCC personnel stormed the library’s Green Legacy Resort around 2 a.m. on Sunday, August 10, allegedly in pursuit of suspected internet fraudsters. Ortese claimed the men, led by an operative identified only as “Olapade,” entered without a warrant, fired shots into the air, and caused panic at a public “Wet & Rave Splash” pool party taking place at the hotel.

> “The actions of the EFCC were nothing short of a Gestapo-style invasion. We are dealing with the infringement of corporate rights, an invasion of privacy, and a blatant violation of human rights,” Ortese told reporters in Abeokuta.

The EFCC insists the operation was based on credible intelligence linking some party-goers to cybercrime.

However, OOPL management disputes the manner in which the operation was conducted, stressing that no warrant was presented and that the Ogun State Police Command, which had earlier provided security clearance for the event, was not informed of the midnight incursion.

Ortese revealed that the OOPL has petitioned the EFCC headquarters in Abuja, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Department of State Services (DSS), demanding an official explanation and a public apology. He warned that legal proceedings would be initiated if those demands were ignored.

The controversy has reignited debates over the EFCC’s operational style, with civil rights advocates arguing that anti-corruption enforcement must respect human rights and legal safeguards.
