Desmond Elliot: Don’t Beg Leaders You Didn’t Elect!
Lagos lawmaker and Nollywood icon, Desmond Elliot, has sent a clear message to residents who habitually stay away from the polls but later demand assistance from elected officials. Speaking after casting his vote at Onitolo Nursery/Primary School in Surulere during the local government elections on Saturday, Elliot did not mince words.
According to the lawmaker representing Surulere Constituency I in the Lagos State House of Assembly, voter apathy is a major threat to functional democracy. He warned that people who fail to participate in elections have no justification to approach public office holders for help.
“You can’t sit at home and later come to seek help from people who others sacrificed to vote into power,” Elliot said bluntly, adding that civic participation is a responsibility, not a favour to politicians.
Elliot pointed out that local government elections are even more impactful to citizens’ daily lives than national polls, as grassroots governance touches areas like primary healthcare, market regulations, waste management, and local road maintenance.
While lamenting the low voter turnout, the actor-turned-politician expressed hope that more residents would show up before the end of voting. He commended LASIEC for conducting a peaceful and professional exercise and encouraged Lagosians to understand the long-term benefits of active political participation.
His final word was a pointed reminder: those who do not vote should not expect to enjoy the benefits of democratic governance.
