Buhari Dies in London at 82
Nigeria has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of former President Muhammadu Buhari. The elder statesman reportedly passed away on Sunday afternoon at a private clinic in London.
Buhari, who served as a military Head of State between 1983 and 1985 and later as a two-term civilian president from 2015 to 2023, was 82 years old.
His death was confirmed by his family in an official statement signed by Garba Shehu, a former presidential spokesperson. The statement read: “Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilaihi Raji’un. The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin.”
Born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, Buhari rose through the military ranks to become one of Nigeria’s most prominent leaders. Widely regarded for his tough anti-corruption stance and military discipline, Buhari’s leadership style remained both praised and controversial.
While he was lauded for prioritising infrastructure, security, and the fight against graft, his administration faced fierce criticism over rising poverty, inflation, and alleged human rights abuses.
As condolences pour in from across the country and abroad, many remember him as a man of strict principles and a towering figure in Nigeria’s leadership landscape.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
