Lagos on Lockdown: Police Enforce Total Shutdown for Elections

Lagos to Shut Down for LG Elections: Total Movement Ban Announced

In preparation for the highly anticipated Local Government Elections, the Lagos State Police Command has announced a total restriction of vehicular movement across the state from 3 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 12, 2025.

This sweeping restriction, which affects all roads and waterways within the state, is part of a broader security measure to ensure a hitch-free, safe, and credible electoral process. Security operatives will be fully deployed across all polling units, collation centres, and flashpoints to maintain order and forestall any breakdown of law and order during the exercise.

The police command urged Lagosians to comply fully with the directive, warning that anyone found violating the movement restriction may face arrest or prosecution. Residents are advised to remain within their neighbourhoods and avoid unnecessary movement unless officially exempted or involved in the electoral process.

While assuring the public of their safety, the police also cautioned political actors and their supporters against any acts of violence, voter intimidation, or disorderly conduct. The command reaffirmed its commitment to a peaceful and transparent election, stressing that it would not hesitate to deal decisively with troublemakers.

With over five million eligible voters expected to participate, the local government election is seen as a critical exercise in grassroots democracy and governance. Authorities are calling on the public to cooperate fully and contribute to the peaceful conduct of the polls.
