LagosExplorer reports that a heartbreaking tragedy unfolded on Sunday, June 29, 2025, when Inspector Afolabi Adeola, a dedicated officer of the Nigerian Police Force, was fatally struck by a speeding cement-laden truck at a checkpoint near the Judiciary Complex on the Abeokuta–Sagamu Expressway in Ogun State.
The 900-bag cargo truck, reportedly rushing through the checkpoint, first collided with a stationary vehicle before plowing into Inspector Adeola, who was on official duty. Eyewitnesses say he sustained catastrophic injuries and was rushed to a Lagos hospital, where he passed away on Monday, June 30, shortly after an X-ray examination.
Authorities, led by a security analyst and traffic responders, documented the scene thoroughly and impounded both the cement truck and another involved vehicle. The driver and additional suspects are set to face court proceedings beginning Wednesday, July 3, 2025.The Ogun State Police Command, through its spokesperson CSP Omolola Odutola, has requested patience from the public, promising an official statement in due course.
Inspector Adeola’s untimely death has ignited fresh debate about the safety of officers and road users at checkpoints. Social media users and local stakeholders have lamented the proliferation of unauthorized and seemingly hazardous roadblocks, accusing some of corruption and flagrant disregard for road safety—concerns that echo before and after this devastating incident.
This tragic event underscores the urgent need for regulatory reforms, improved training for checkpoint operations, enhanced vehicle maintenance monitoring, and stricter enforcement of traffic laws to safeguard both law enforcement personnel and the Nigerian public.
