Fayemi Denies Starting ADC Coalition, Slams Amaechi’s Claim

Former Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has vehemently denied claims by ex-Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi that he co-founded the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition.

In a statement released on Sunday by his Media Office in Abuja, Fayemi described Amaechi’s assertion as “categorically false and misleading.” He emphasized, “I have never said that I founded or started the ADC coalition,” adding, “I have never taken credit for starting the ADC coalition.” Fayemi’s camp noted that a thorough search found no credible evidence, video, or reputable media report supporting Amaechi’s claim.

Rotimi Amaechi had previously asserted that the ADC coalition was birthed in his presence alongside Fayemi and others. According to Amaechi, “the coalition started with me and Fayemi in the house of Nasiru Danu with Salihu Mohammed and others.” This statement sparked controversy and prompted Fayemi’s strong rebuttal.

The ADC coalition is an emerging political alliance bringing together influential figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Senate President David Mark, and ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai. The coalition is seen by many political analysts as a strategic opposition force positioning itself ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

Fayemi’s public denial reflects growing tensions and power struggles within the coalition as leaders jostle for control.

Political experts suggest that the disagreement between Amaechi and Fayemi may affect the cohesion of the ADC coalition, which needs unity to effectively challenge dominant parties like the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
