President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, alongside First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, hosted the Super Falcons to a grand presidential dinner at the State House in Abuja on Sunday, July 28, following the team’s historic WAFCON 2025 victory over Morocco.
The atmosphere was electric as Nigeria’s music sensations—Teni, Flavour, and Timi Dakolo—graced the occasion with dazzling performances that brought even more celebration to an already joyous moment. The Falcons, who edged Morocco 3–2 in a thrilling final, were honored for their resilience, skill, and patriotic display that brought home Nigeria’s 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title.
The evening was filled with glitz and cultural vibrance, as players and officials were joined by government dignitaries, sports administrators, and entertainment icons. The Super Falcons danced and laughed, relishing the national recognition after a grueling tournament that saw them battle through fierce competition from across the continent.
WAFCON 2025, the 15th edition of the biennial tournament, kicked off in June with twelve African nations competing in Morocco. Nigeria, drawn into Group B, faced stiff opposition from the likes of Cameroon and Senegal, but powered through the group stage unbeaten. The team’s path to the final included a dramatic semi-final win against South Africa on penalties, setting the stage for the showdown with hosts Morocco.
Despite Morocco taking an early lead, the Super Falcons mounted a fierce comeback with goals from Esther Okoronkwo, Folashade Ijamilusi, and Jennifer Echegini, sealing a hard-fought 3–2 victory that sparked celebrations across the country.
Sunday’s presidential dinner not only celebrated the players’ accomplishments but also served as a symbolic nod to the growing importance of women’s football in Nigeria. The President commended the team for their indomitable spirit, stating that their performance had once again placed Nigeria at the pinnacle of African women’s football.
The event concluded with heartfelt tributes, live music, and a sense of national pride that underscored the unifying power of sports and entertainment.
